SEAG comprehension practice
Comprehension makes up a large part of the Northern Ireland transfer test English paper, and it tests more than just reading speed. Children need to answer literal questions about what a passage says, inference questions about what it suggests, and vocabulary questions about what a word means in context. Below is a short passage with three real-style questions and full worked answers.
Try a short passage and three questions
"Although she was nervous, Priya stepped onto the stage and began to speak. Her voice shook for the first few words, but by the end of her speech, the whole hall was silent, listening."
What does "the whole hall was silent, listening" suggest about Priya's speech?
A. It was too quiet to hear B. It became engaging as it went on C. The audience fell asleep D. Nobody was interested
Answer: It became engaging as it went on. The passage says her voice shook at first but the hall fell silent by the end, which suggests the audience became increasingly engaged, not bored or unable to hear. This is an inference question: the answer is not stated directly, but the text clearly points to it.
What does "nervous" mean in this passage?
A. Excited and happy B. Worried and uneasy C. Confident and calm D. Bored and tired
Answer: Worried and uneasy. This is confirmed by her voice shaking at the start, which shows physical signs of nervousness. Vocabulary-in-context questions can usually be checked against a clue elsewhere in the same passage.
What happened first in the passage?
A. The hall went silent B. Priya's voice shook C. Priya finished her speech D. The audience left
Answer: Priya's voice shook. This is a literal question, answerable by finding the exact sentence in the text. Priya's voice shaking is described before the hall falling silent, so it happened first.
What tends to catch children out
The most common mistake is answering from memory or general knowledge instead of the actual passage, especially on inference questions. Encouraging your child to re-read the relevant sentence before choosing an answer, every time, is the single most effective habit for this section of the test.
Practise this topic, then sit a full mock
Transfera has original comprehension passages and questions across easy, medium and hard difficulty, each with a clear written explanation. Once your child is confident here, a full timed mock brings this topic together with the rest of the English paper.
