Transfer test practice for Northern Ireland

What the transfer test is
The transfer test is the assessment used for grammar school places in Northern Ireland. It is set by the Schools Entrance Assessment Group, usually shortened to SEAG, and most pupils sit it in P7 at around ten or eleven years old. Children answer questions in English and Maths taken from the Key Stage 2 curriculum, across two papers in November.

How Transfera helps your child prepare

Practise by topic, then sit a full mock
On the Maths side, your child can work through arithmetic, fractions and decimals, percentages, simple algebra, shape and space, and reading charts and tables. On the English side, practice covers reading comprehension, grammar, punctuation, spelling and vocabulary. Once the individual topics feel comfortable, a mixed mock brings everything together under the clock.

A. 60 pounds B. 55 pounds C. 65 pounds D. 20 pounds
Answer: 60 pounds. A quarter of 80 is 20, and 80 take away 20 leaves 60. Finding ten percent first, then building up, is often the quickest way for children to handle percentages in their head.
And one from English
Which word is the odd one out: enormous, gigantic, tiny, massive?
Answer: tiny. The other three all mean very large, so tiny is the one that does not belong. Spotting how words group together by meaning is a skill that comes up again and again in the English paper.

Common questions from parents
When do children sit the transfer test?
Most sit it in P7, usually aged ten or eleven, with the papers taken in November. Plenty of families begin gentle practice in P6 so the autumn term of P7 feels calmer.
What subjects are tested?
