SEAG fractions and decimals practice
Fractions and decimals sit at the centre of the Northern Ireland transfer test Maths paper. They turn up as direct questions, and they hide inside percentage, ratio and measurement problems too, so a child who is confident here has an advantage right across the paper. Below are three real-style questions with full worked answers, the same format your child will see in a Transfera mock.
Try three fractions and decimals questions
Write 9/12 in its simplest form.
A. 2/3 B. 3/4 C. 4/5 D. 6/8
Answer: 3/4. Both 9 and 12 can be divided by 3, giving 3/4. Always look for the largest number that divides evenly into both the top and bottom of the fraction.
Which is larger: 3/4 or 5/8?
A. 3/4 B. 5/8 C. They are equal D. Cannot tell
Answer: 3/4. Converting to decimals makes this quick: 3/4 is 0.75 and 5/8 is 0.625, so 3/4 is larger. Comparing fractions by converting to decimals first is often faster than finding a common denominator under time pressure.
Write 45% as a decimal.
A. 0.45 B. 4.5 C. 0.045 D. 45
Answer: 0.45. Percent means out of 100, so dividing by 100 moves the digits two places to the right. A common mistake is dividing by only 10, which gives 4.5 instead.
What tends to catch children out
The most common slips are simplifying a fraction only partway, mixing up which way a decimal point moves when multiplying or dividing by 10, 100 or 1000, and losing marks on ordering fractions with different denominators. All three come up repeatedly in the transfer test, and all three improve quickly with focused, repeated practice rather than general revision.
Practise this topic, then sit a full mock
Transfera has original fractions and decimals questions across easy, medium and hard difficulty, each with a clear written explanation. Once your child is confident here, a full timed mock brings this topic together with the rest of the Maths paper.
