SEAG data and statistics practice
Data questions on the transfer test test whether a child can read a chart or table accurately, and whether they can calculate an average correctly. Below are three real-style questions with full worked answers.
Try three data and statistics questions
Five children scored 6, 8, 7, 9 and 10 in a spelling test. What was the mean score?
A. 7 B. 8 C. 9 D. 10
Answer: 8. Adding the scores gives 6 + 8 + 7 + 9 + 10 = 40. Dividing by 5 children gives a mean of 8.
A bar chart shows that 12 pupils chose football as their favourite sport and 7 chose swimming. How many more chose football than swimming?
A. 4 B. 5 C. 6 D. 19
Answer: 5. 12 minus 7 equals 5. Difference questions like this are common with bar charts, so always check whether the question asks for a total or a difference.
In the set of numbers 3, 5, 5, 7, 9, which number appears most often?
A. 3 B. 5 C. 7 D. 9
Answer: 5. This is asking for the mode, which is simply the number that appears most often in a list. Here, 5 appears twice while the others appear only once.
What tends to catch children out
The most common mistakes are misreading the scale on a bar chart, and confusing the mean, median and mode. Being clear on what each term actually means before the exam avoids confusion under time pressure.
Practise this topic, then sit a full mock
Transfera has original data and statistics questions across easy, medium and hard difficulty, each with a clear written explanation. Once your child is confident here, a full timed mock brings this topic together with the rest of the Maths paper.
