SEAG probability practice
Probability questions on the transfer test are usually about counters, dice or spinners, and ask a child to express or compare chances. Below are three real-style questions with full worked answers.
Try three probability questions
A bag has 4 red counters and 6 blue counters. What is the probability of picking a red counter?
A. 2/5 B. 2/3 C. 3/5 D. 4/6
Answer: 2/5. There are 10 counters in total, and 4 are red, giving 4/10, which simplifies to 2/5.
A normal six-sided dice is rolled. What is the probability of rolling an even number?
A. 1/6 B. 1/3 C. 1/2 D. 2/3
Answer: 1/2. There are 3 even numbers (2, 4, 6) out of 6 possible outcomes, giving 3/6, which simplifies to 1/2.
Which word best describes the chance of the sun rising tomorrow?
A. Impossible B. Unlikely C. Even chance D. Certain
Answer: Certain. This tests everyday probability language rather than calculation. The sun rising is something that will definitely happen, so it is certain.
What tends to catch children out
The most common mistakes are counting the wrong total (forgetting to include all outcomes), and not simplifying the resulting fraction. Double-checking both steps takes only seconds but avoids losing marks.
Practise this topic, then sit a full mock
Transfera has original probability questions across easy, medium and hard difficulty, each with a clear written explanation. Once your child is confident here, a full timed mock brings this topic together with the rest of the Maths paper.
