SEAG geometry and measurement practice

Measurement questions on the transfer test cover time, volume, capacity and coordinates. They often disguise themselves as everyday problems, so reading carefully matters as much as the maths itself. Below are three real-style questions with full worked answers.

Try three geometry and measurement questions

A film starts at 6:45pm and lasts 95 minutes. What time does it end?

A. 8:05pm   B. 8:10pm   C. 8:20pm   D. 8:30pm

Answer: 8:20pm. 95 minutes is 1 hour and 35 minutes. Adding 1 hour to 6:45pm gives 7:45pm, then adding 35 minutes gives 8:20pm.

What is the volume of a cube with sides of 4 cm?

A. 16 cubic cm   B. 32 cubic cm   C. 48 cubic cm   D. 64 cubic cm

Answer: 64 cubic cm. Volume of a cube is length x width x height, so 4 x 4 x 4 = 64. All three sides of a cube are equal, which makes this calculation quicker than for other cuboids.

A point is plotted at (3, 5). What is its y-coordinate?

A. 3   B. 5   C. 8   D. 15

Answer: 5. In coordinates written as (x, y), the second number is always the y-coordinate, so it is 5 here.

What tends to catch children out

The most common mistake is treating time as a normal decimal number, for example thinking 95 minutes is 1 hour and 95 minutes rather than converting properly. Working in clear stages avoids this.

Practise this topic, then sit a full mock

Transfera has original geometry and measurement questions across easy, medium and hard difficulty, each with a clear written explanation. Once your child is confident here, a full timed mock brings this topic together with the rest of the Maths paper.
