SEAG shape and space practice

Shape and space questions on the transfer test are mostly about applying a small set of rules confidently and quickly. Below are three real-style questions with full worked answers.

Try three shape and space questions

Two angles in a triangle are 65 degrees and 80 degrees. What is the third angle?

A. 25 degrees   B. 35 degrees   C. 45 degrees   D. 55 degrees

Answer: 35 degrees. Angles in a triangle always add up to 180 degrees. 65 + 80 = 145, and 180 minus 145 leaves 35 degrees.

What is the area of a rectangle that is 8 cm long and 3 cm wide?

A. 11 square cm   B. 16 square cm   C. 22 square cm   D. 24 square cm

Answer: 24 square cm. Area of a rectangle is length multiplied by width, so 8 x 3 = 24. Remembering to write the units as square centimetres is an easy mark to pick up.

How many lines of symmetry does a square have?

A. 1   B. 2   C. 4   D. 8

Answer: 4. A square has 4 lines of symmetry: one through each pair of opposite sides, and one through each pair of opposite corners.

What tends to catch children out

The most common mistakes are forgetting the total for angles in a triangle versus angles on a straight line, and mixing up area with perimeter. Writing down the relevant rule before calculating helps avoid both.

Practise this topic, then sit a full mock

Transfera has original shape and space questions across easy, medium and hard difficulty, each with a clear written explanation. Once your child is confident here, a full timed mock brings this topic together with the rest of the Maths paper.
